The title translates to "Taking Flight." In essence, this watercolor composition celebrates the harmony between nature and motion. Specifically, Pichiyá depicts birds mid-flight against the dramatic landscapes of Guatemala's altiplano. The result evokes both beauty and freedom, a vivid snapshot of the region's vibrant natural environment.
However, this piece carries a deeper meaning. Pichiyá's "Cascada de Trinos" (Cascade of Trills) series reflects the loss of forests and the disappearance of birds that once inhabited them. As a Kaqchikel speaker from San Juan Comalapa, he learned the names of many birds in his mother tongue, species that no longer exist in the wild. Furthermore, his Maya nahual is a bird. Consequently, every brushstroke in Alzando el Vuelo by Pichiyá becomes both a song and an act of preservation. Each bird he paints echoes what once existed and now lives only in visual memory.
