LABYRINTHS is a printmaking project I have been working on for a couple of years, alongside painting and sculpture. It is a technical investigation into typographic engravings in woodcuts from the late 19th century, when an impeccable system was developed to translate photographic images into the language of lines and dots through “cross-grain” engraving. After years of research into this type of engraving, the patterns, and photogravure, I have arrived at these technical conclusions, which I apply in this project. It addresses themes that began to concern me after I became deaf, focusing on the senses—sight, hearing, touch—and a series of iconographies that became deeply meaningful in my life, such as the Tree and the House. The word “labyrinths” reflects how I conceive these engravings, which in their most abstract form are labyrinths, paths; searching for a way out of the linear patterns, and that exit is the transformation into the figurative object that emerges from the strokes, in this case, into particles—the EYES, the sense of sight, my most treasured sense.
